Carbonated soft drinks containing bitter compounds such as quinine. Tonic waters were developed as palatable vehicles for antimalarial quinine in colonial tropics; modern versions contain only small, regulated amounts of quinine — enough for characteristic bitterness, far below therapeutic doses. Typically sweetened and flavoured with citrus botanicals, tonic is the classic partner for gin. Quality manufacture requires precise carbonation, balanced bitterness, and clarity; quinine levels must comply with limits (around 83 mg/L in many jurisdictions). Lightstruck storage can degrade flavour, so tinted bottles and cool storage protect quality.
