Toast bread
Bread formulated and baked specifically for toasting — typically fine-textured sandwich loaves sliced to uniform thickness. Toast bread is designed to brown evenly under radiant heat: balanced sugar content for golden colour without burning, a firm crumb that crisps rather than shatters, and slices sized for standard toaster slots. Enriched and wholemeal variants extend the category nutritionally. Industrially, consistent loaf volume, slice thickness, and moisture content are the quality parameters, since variable slices toast unevenly. Like all bread, it stales by starch retrogradation — a process toasting temporarily reverses at the surface.
