Usually unicellular, dormant reproductive or resting bodies produced by microorganisms under conditions of environmental stress (e.g. extremes of temperature and dehydration). Resistant to unfavourable environmental conditions, and capable of germinating and developing into vegetative cells when environmental conditions are favourable, without fusion with another cell.
