Sharks
Sharks are cartilaginous marine fish, and several species are utilized as food fish, including spiny dogfish, catsharks, and smooth hounds from the families Squalidae, Scyliorhinidae, and Triakidae. Species such as Squalus acanthias are eaten smoked or as fish and chips. As apex predators, large sharks can accumulate mercury, so consumption advice often limits intake, especially for vulnerable groups. Sustainable management of shark fisheries remains challenging. They are magnificent animals deserving protection. Choose seafood from sustainable sources. Conservation and use must find balance.
