Saskatoon fruits are dark blue to black berries produced by Amelanchier alnifolia, native to North America. The mild flavour resembles a combination of blueberry and cranberry. They are used in pies, preserves, and fruit toppings, and are rich in antioxidants and other phytonutrients. Traditionally harvested by Indigenous peoples, they are now also cultivated commercially, with breeding improving berry size and yield. Their nutritional profile and hardiness make them a promising crop for northern growers. They freeze well, extending their season for bakers and cooks.
