Rutin
Rutin is a disaccharide derivative of quercetin, containing glucose and rhamnose, found mainly in cereals and once called vitamin P. It belongs to the flavonoids, plant compounds studied for antioxidative and vascular-health effects. In foods it occurs naturally in buckwheat, asparagus, and citrus fruits, and its presence contributes to the interest in these foods as sources of bioactive compounds. Research continues into how well it is absorbed and what physiological effects it has in the human body. Supplements standardised for rutin content are also sold, though food sources remain the gentler option.
