Rainbow trout
A widely farmed salmonid fish, Oncorhynchus mykiss, native to the Pacific drainages of North America and now cultured on every continent. Its pink, flavorful flesh, efficient feed conversion, and tolerance of farming conditions have made it one of the world’s leading aquaculture species, sold fresh, smoked, and frozen. Nutritionally it offers high-quality protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Responsible farms manage water quality, stocking density, and disease, while processors ensure rapid chilling, hygienic filleting, and cold-chain integrity. Wild populations are protected by fishing regulations in their native range, balancing sport, conservation, and food production.
