Porphyridium
A red microalgal genus in the family Porphyridiaceae, cultivated for its sulfated polysaccharides and natural red pigments. Food and nutraceutical researchers value its bioactive compounds for thickening, gelling, antioxidant, and coloring applications, and for potential health effects under study. As with all algal ingredients, production must control contamination from the culture environment and verify that pigments and polysaccharides meet food-grade purity standards, including limits on heavy metals and microcystins. Controlled photobioreactor cultivation gives the consistency and traceability that food manufacturers require from novel ingredients.
