Ostriches

Ostriches are large, flightless, fast-running African birds, Struthio camelus, of the family Struthionidae. As demand for ostrich meat has grown in many countries, farming has expanded well beyond Africa into Europe and Scandinavia. In livestock production, ostriches supply lean red meat, large eggs, feathers, and leather, making them multipurpose farm animals. Rearing requires appropriate climate, fencing, nutrition, and handling expertise, since the birds are powerful and fast. Slaughter and processing follow red-meat hygiene standards to ensure safety. The industry’s growth illustrates how consumer interest in alternative proteins can establish entirely new livestock sectors with dedicated supply chains.
