Menthol

Menthol is a naturally occurring monoterpenoid alcohol that gives mint its characteristic cooling sensation and aroma. It is extracted from mint oils, mainly cornmint and peppermint, or produced synthetically, and it is one of the most widely used flavor compounds in the world, appearing in chewing gum, confectionery, toothpaste, and beverages. Beyond flavor, its cooling and mild anesthetic effect is valued in throat lozenges and oral-care products. Food regulations treat menthol as a permitted flavoring within established daily-intake limits, and its purity and optical rotation are checked against pharmacopeial standards. Crystalline menthol must be stored cool and sealed, since it sublimes slowly and readily absorbs odors from its surroundings.
