Membrane bioreactors
Membrane bioreactors combine conventional biological wastewater treatment with membrane filtration, allowing a food plant to digest organic waste with microorganisms while a submerged or side-stream membrane retains the biomass and produces a high-quality effluent. They are widely used by dairies, breweries, and fruit processors whose effluent carries heavy organic loads of sugars, proteins, and fats. Compared with clarifier-based systems, they deliver a smaller footprint, much better solids separation, and water clean enough for reuse in non-contact applications such as cooling or cleaning, supporting corporate sustainability programs. The main operating challenges are membrane fouling by fats and proteins, which is managed with aeration scouring, periodic chemical cleans, and careful control of sludge age.
