Manganese peroxidases
Manganese peroxidases (EC 1.11.1.13) are haem-containing enzymes that oxidise Mn(II) to Mn(III), generating a diffusible oxidant chelated by organic acids. They are major ligninolytic enzymes produced by white-rot fungi (e.g. Phanerochaete chrysosporium), central to the potential use of these organisms for lignin degradation, breakdown of toxic pollutants (PAHs, dyes, chlorophenols) and decolourisation of olive-oil-mill effluents. Their oxidative power is of interest for bioremediation, biopulping and industrial biocatalysis, where enzymatic treatment could replace harsh chemicals. In food contexts they are studied for degrading mycotoxins and processing-effluent phenolics; activity depends on hydrogen peroxide supply, pH and manganese availability.
