Lycasin
Lycasin is the registered trade name for a polyol sweetener made by hydrogenating starch hydrolysates, consisting of about 50% maltitol, 16% maltotriitol and 7% sorbitol, with the remainder higher hydrogenated saccharides. Used as a bulk sweetener, it may be combined with other sugar alcohols to replace glucose syrups in sugar-free and reduced-sugar confectionery, chewing gum and pharmaceutical syrups, providing sweetness (roughly 0.6–0.9× sucrose) with fewer calories and without promoting tooth decay. Like other polyols it is incompletely absorbed in the small intestine, so excessive consumption can have a laxative effect — a warning required on labels above threshold levels — and it must be declared as a polyol/humectant in ingredients.
