Low sugar foods
Low-sugar foods are manufactured to be low in sugar — such as low-sugar confectionery, jams, beverages and dairy desserts. They commonly contain sweeteners (polyols, intense sweeteners like stevia, sucralose) and bulking agents (polydextrose, fibres) as sugar substitutes, may also reduce calories, and are regarded by consumers as a healthier option; lower sugar can also benefit dental health and glycaemic control. ‘Low-sugar’ and ‘sugar-free’ claims must meet legal thresholds (e.g. EU: ≤5 g sugars/100 g for ‘low sugars’; ≤0.5 g/100 g for ‘sugars-free’), verified analytically with compliant nutrition labelling.
