Linuron (3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1-methoxy-1-methylurea) is a selective systemic (phenylurea) herbicide for pre- and post-emergence control of annual grasses and broadleaved weeds around vegetables (carrots, potatoes), cereals, coffee, tea and ornamentals. Classified by the US EPA as slightly toxic (Category III) but a possible endocrine disruptor, its residues on food crops are controlled by maximum residue limits (MRLs) and pre-harvest intervals; the EU did not renew its approval, restricting use. Label directions — dose, timing, buffer zones — must be followed to keep produce safe, and monitoring programmes test vegetables and cereals for residues.
