Lindane
Lindane is an alternative term for the gamma isomer of HCH (hexachlorocyclohexane) — an organochlorine insecticide once widely used on crops, in forestry and in public-health programmes (lice, scabies treatments). Persistent in the environment, bioaccumulating in fat and a possible endocrine disruptor, its agricultural use is now widely banned — listed under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants — though residues still appear in environmental and food monitoring from historic use. Maximum residue limits govern any remaining permitted uses (some pharmaceutical), and laboratories screen fatty foods (dairy, fish) for HCH isomers as part of POP surveillance.
