Huckleberries

The berries of Gaylusacia plants, G. baccata being the familiar one. Blueberry lookalikes, they hide harder seeds inside, wear thicker skins, and taste slightly more astringent. Eaten fresh or baked into goods such as pies, they share the blueberry family’s reputation for antioxidant pigments, though they remain largely a wild-harvested, regional fruit. Because they are rarely cultivated at scale, supply depends on wild stands, and harvest handling — prompt cooling and protection from crushing — determines the quality that reaches the consumer.
