Grapefruit is a citrus fruit, Citrus paradisi, formed as a hybrid of pomelos and sweet oranges, and rich in vitamin C like other citrus fruits. Cultivars may be white, pink or red fleshed and seedless or seeded, with the pink and red types coloured by lycopene. It is eaten fresh and juiced, valued for its bitter-sweet refreshment. Consumers on certain medications must note that grapefruit compounds can interfere with drug metabolism, and processors check fruit for maturity, juice content and freedom from blemish before packing or juicing.
