GM microorganisms
GM microorganisms, the engineered microbes of biotechnology, brew enzymes, vitamins, amino acids and flavourings in contained fermenters. Because they never enter fields or food chains directly, they face lighter public scrutiny than GM crops, yet regulators still demand strain dossiers, containment proof and absence of antibiotic-resistance markers before any product reaches the market. Their products must meet the same purity specifications as conventional equivalents. For food makers they are workhorses, delivering consistent, high-purity ingredients at industrial scale year-round for food manufacturers.
