Gesatop
Gesatop is an alternative term for the herbicide simazine, a triazine herbicide once widely used to control weeds in maize, orchards and vineyards. It was valued for long soil persistence, which gave extended weed control from a single application, but that same persistence led to groundwater contamination. The EU withdrew approval, and its use has declined worldwide under modern pesticide regulation. Its history illustrates why herbicide regulation now weighs weed-control benefits against environmental and drinking-water risks, and residue monitoring still occasionally detects this legacy compound in water supplies.
