Enamels
Semi-transparent or opaque ceramic coatings applied to metals, pottery or glass for protection or decoration, including food cans and cooking pots. Poorly made enamelled food-contact items can release lead or cadmium, a genuine health risk. The term also describes smooth, hard-drying paints and varnishes. Acidic foods — fruit juices, tomato products — leach metals most aggressively, so migration testing uses acidic food simulants and strict limits for lead and cadmium apply to ceramic and enamelled food-contact articles. Modern formulations use lead- and cadmium-free frits, and reputable manufacturers certify compliance with food-contact regulations.
