Dehairing strips hair from the hides and fleeces of slaughtered animals, most often with scalding, singeing or chemical treatments. The step is performed as an intervention to cut microbial load and improve visual cleanliness before dressing. Pig lines combine scalding with rotary scrapers, finishing with singeing flames that also reduce surface bacteria. Scald temperature needs careful control: too cool and hair sets fast, too hot and skin is damaged. Hair-free carcasses inspect better and carry fewer contaminants into the chill room.
