Cryoscopes
Cryoscopes are instruments used for measuring the boiling point and freezing point of liquids. Their best-known food application is the dairy cryoscope test for added water in milk: genuine milk freezes within a narrow, well-characterized range, and even small dilutions shift the freezing point detectably. Quality laboratories rely on calibrated cryoscopes for this routine adulteration check, which protects both consumers and honest producers. The same instruments serve research on brines, sugar solutions and other food liquids, where freezing and boiling points reveal concentration, purity and colligative behaviour.
