Cashew apples
Cashew apples are the fleshy, edible fruits of the cashew tree, Anacardium occidentale, which is grown primarily for its crop of cashew nuts. These acidic-tasting, apple-like fruits are rich in vitamin C and can be eaten raw or processed into jams, jellies, juices and wines. Highly perishable, bruising easily and fermenting quickly, they are mostly consumed near where they are grown. In Brazil and India they are a beloved seasonal treat, enjoyed fresh or as refreshing juice. Distillers ferment their sugary juice into regional spirits enjoyed across the tropics.
