Bird rape denotes oilseeds produced by Brassica rapa or B. campestris, a cruciferous oilseed crop grown for centuries. Historically its oil served for lamps and lubricants, since it is high in erucic acid, which limits food use at high levels. Modern low-erucic-acid cultivars, developed through sustained plant breeding, underpin canola-type rapeseed oils that dominate healthy cooking-oil markets. The crop also yields leafy vegetables such as turnip greens from the same species, showing the versatility of Brassica rapa across oil, vegetable, and forage uses. Its story is one of breeding transforming an industrial oilseed into a major food crop.
