Benzimidazole

Benzimidazole is a member of a pesticide and anthelmintic group whose residues may contaminate foods. This chemical family includes the fungicides benomyl and carbendazim and veterinary dewormers used in livestock, giving it dual agricultural and veterinary roles. Maximum residue limits apply to treated crops and animal products, with pre-harvest intervals and withdrawal periods keeping residues within safe bounds. Their broad use makes benzimidazoles a staple of residue-monitoring programmes, and analysts test for the parent compounds and their common metabolites. Resistance to benzimidazole fungicides in crop pathogens is also a significant agronomic issue, driving rotation with other modes of action.
