A synthetic cytokinin sold as BAP and used as a plant growth regulator to steer development in fruit, vegetable and cereal crops. Growers apply it to stimulate lateral branching, improve fruit size and shape in apples and pears, and delay the yellowing of harvested leafy produce. By mimicking the plant’s own cell-division hormones it gives orchard and greenhouse managers fine control over crop architecture and postharvest appearance. Like other growth regulators it is subject to maximum residue limits on edible crops, and treated produce may be screened at borders for compliance.
